You must be 21 or older to use the sites we cover (18 or older only where a specific operator's own minimum age allows it and your local law permits it). If gambling is causing you harm, call or text 1-800-GAMBLER (1-800-426-2537) at any time.

Responsible gambling means keeping betting a paid-for form of entertainment, with limits you set in advance and can afford. On this page we explain how to do that, and why it matters more than usual when you bet with an offshore sportsbook. Last reviewed: Sep 30, 2026.

Why offshore betting needs extra care

Offshore sportsbooks are licensed outside the United States, commonly in places such as Curaçao, Panama or Costa Rica. They accept US players, but that is not the same as being authorized by your state. Their legal status for US bettors is a grey area, and the rules differ from state to state. Check your own state's laws, and consult a qualified professional for legal or tax questions.

In practical terms, that means:

  • No US state regulation or player protections. Segregated funds, state dispute resolution and guaranteed payouts do not apply. A state gaming commission or board generally cannot step in if a dispute arises.
  • Payment risk. An offshore sportsbook may delay, reduce or refuse a withdrawal. Advertised payout speeds are claims by the operator, not guarantees.
  • Fewer safer-gambling tools. Offshore sportsbooks may lack the self-exclusion, deposit-limit and cooling-off tools that regulated US operators must offer. Some offer little or none, and a self-exclusion at one site does not carry over to others.
  • Crypto volatility. If you deposit or withdraw cryptocurrency, its dollar value can move between deposit and cashout. You can lose money on the coin even if your bets break even.

Set your limits before you place a bet

  1. Decide a monthly entertainment budget from money left after rent, bills, debt payments and savings. Never bet money you need.
  2. Split it into small units so no single wager or parlay can meaningfully dent it.
  3. Fund your account only with that budget. Don't top up mid-week because a game "is due."
  4. Set a time limit for each session and stick to it.
  5. Treat any money you keep at an offshore sportsbook as at risk. Withdraw winnings rather than leaving large balances sitting there.
  6. Write the limits down and review them monthly.

Warning signs that betting is becoming a problem

  • Betting more than you planned, or for longer than you planned
  • Chasing losses with bigger or riskier wagers
  • Borrowing money, using credit cards or selling items to bet
  • Hiding your betting from family or friends
  • Betting to escape stress, anxiety or low mood
  • Feeling irritable or restless when you try to cut back
  • Neglecting work, relationships or bills

If several of these sound familiar, stop depositing and talk to someone. Betting is not a way to fix financial problems, and no tip, pick or system is a guaranteed win.

Bonuses, rollover and pressure to keep betting

Sign-up and reload bonuses can encourage you to deposit or bet more than you intended. Every bonus carries conditions, typically rollover or wagering requirements, minimum odds, time limits and eligibility rules, which are set by each sportsbook and can change. Read the terms on the operator's site before you accept anything. A bonus is never a reason to deposit more than your budget, and declining one is always an option. Our site lists welcome offers as advertised by the sportsbooks, and they are not guarantees of value.

Safer habits when using offshore sportsbooks

AreaWhat to do
DepositsStart small. Confirm how withdrawals work before you deposit a larger amount.
WithdrawalsCheck payout limits, fees and verification (KYC) rules in the terms. Expect ID checks, especially on larger cashouts.
CryptoRemember price swings. Only use coins you understand and double-check wallet addresses, since transfers are usually irreversible.
SupportKeep screenshots and emails of any dispute. Contact the operator's support first.
Self-controlIf no limit tools exist, use your bank's gambling-transaction blocks or device-level blocking software where available.
DevicesUse strong passwords and two-factor authentication where offered, and never share your account.

Where to get help in the US

  • 1-800-GAMBLER (1-800-426-2537): national helpline, confidential and available around the clock. Text support is also offered.
  • National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG): information and referrals to local services.
  • Gamblers Anonymous: peer support meetings across the country.
  • Your state's problem gambling agency: many states fund free counseling. Search your state's name with "problem gambling helpline."

Help for family members is available too. If someone close to you is struggling, these same services can advise you.

How we treat responsible gambling across our reviews

Our rankings weigh odds, markets, bonuses, payout speed, banking and trustworthiness. They are based on research and verification of published information, not on our own deposits or withdrawals, and commission does not buy position. We include the risks alongside every recommendation. You can read more on our About Us page, see the Terms and Conditions, or reach us through Contact Us if you spot something that needs correcting.

Age and eligibility

Only adults who are legally allowed to gamble where they live should use betting sites. The minimum age is 21 in many US jurisdictions and 18 in some; offshore operators set their own minimums, and meeting an operator's age rule does not make betting legal in your state. Nothing on this site is aimed at anyone under 21.

Remember: gambling involves risk, you can lose money, and with offshore sportsbooks you may also be unable to recover it. If it stops being fun, stop. Call 1-800-GAMBLER for confidential support.
